My 17-year-old son recently told me, “Mom, you write like you read–always working on several books at once!”

It’s true. 

I get antsy when the stack of books on my nightstand dwindles and I compulsively keep a steady stream of books on hold at the library and queued up on my Audible & Amazon lists.

I likewise get uneasy if I lack blank pages in the notebooks I keep handy in my nightstand drawer and around the house. When my husband got me a new stack of blank notebooks for my birthday, I was beside myself with joy.

Over the past five years, I’ve written at least five novels and started a few more, all currently in various stages of development–from first drafts to umpteenth drafts. Family and friends keep asking me, “When can we read them?”

This website is part of my attempt–my resolution, no less–to focus my efforts and to share them with you.

In 2010, I wrote my first novel—loosely based on events from my childhood—while participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Since that time, I’ve been hooked. What can I say? I’ve found I love the whole process–writing, editing, and learning about writing.

I can see that this can be a lifelong pursuit.

While I work toward publication, I will share my progress here, as well as my thoughts about what I’m reading, writing, and otherwise doing (AKA, life). I’d also love to hear your thoughts and to get your suggestions for what to include in these pages.

Taking Care

I have been avoiding writing. I am not sure if the circumstances I’ve been dealing with have kept me too busy or if they’ve just kept me overwhelmed. There seems to be too much to think about that I don’t want to think about. Yet writing may prove therapeutic and perhaps sharing how I’m learning to cope through challenging times might help you, too.

There are a couple of ongoing issues in my family. The main one is that my husband of 25 years, the man with whom I’ve shared over half of my life, has been battling pancreatic cancer since he was first diagnosed in August of 2013. Last September, another tumor was discovered in his liver. As that was unfolding, our youngest son, Trenton, became increasingly ill and was eventually bedridden, missing an entire term of tenth grade.

Just before Thanksgiving, Trenton was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency, a chronic life-threatening disease that I share. This was the same week that our miracle, cancer-surviving dog died and that we got the news that Scott’s liver tumor was definitely the same cancer he’d had in his pancreas, which means he had entered stage 4b—incurable pancreatic cancer. It was not our best week.

How have I kept my head above water throughout all the stress?

1. I discovered that self-care is not selfish.

When others depend on you, taking care of yourself has to be a priority. After our most difficult week in November, I saw my nurse practitioner to make a plan for self-care. She prescribed an antidepressant that I’d successfully taken before for PMS, and advocated massage and meditation. I managed to snag a Groupon deal for 2, 90-minute massages and told Scott that would be my Christmas present and I purchased an app called Calm for guided meditation (particularly useful to get to sleep at night).

2. I got more involved in my faith community.

My church has been another lifesaver. The people are loving and supportive plus I’ve found joy in serving there. I started playing the piano for the children’s Christmas musical and ongoing choirs. Rehearsals and services are times when I can receive positive energy from the kids and not think about my troubles (at least not enough to take away my smile).

3. I joined a support group.

My church has a cancer support group for cancer patients and their caregivers. It is one thing to talk to friends and family about what you’re going through and quite another to talk to others who are going through the same things themselves. It is a relief to share openly with people who speak the same language after being inducted into this unwelcome world of cancer. Sharing with others who understand also removes the necessity to share too much with those for whom it may be a burden.

4. I read.

The Happiness Project and Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin are good resources for maintaining a positive attitude and home environment. My main takeaways have been to keep a gratitude journal, to display family photos and albums and other meaningful objects in our home, and to simplify whenever possible. My husband and I try to get outside in our beautiful neighborhood each day, walking our dog and enjoying time together.

Another book I have been working through is Cultivating Courage by Dr. Mary Maaga. I had the benefit of hearing one of Mary’s sermons at our church and meeting her afterward. Years ago, she was widowed with two young children and has done a lot of personal work to cultivate her courage and become the person she was created to be. Her book is written in workbook form and I find myself returning to it periodically as an ongoing study from which I glean more as time goes on.

5. I started a new hobby.

During his first rounds of chemo back in 2013, Scott started making chain mail jewelry, a hobby he’d learned as a young teen. He has become quite the artist and developed a level of skill that has created a following. I’ve had my writing and piano, but both of those pursuits had become somewhat entangled in the pressures of trying to find a way to pursue them to create an income (as we’ve always relied solely on Scott’s income).

Another thing I’ve always wanted to do was to learn to paint, particularly doing mixed media art. I’d been following a Portland artist, Kelly Rae Roberts, for about 10 years and when she offered a bundle sale on her online classes for her 10th anniversary, Scott supported me in going for it.

Pursuing a hobby is therapeutic in itself, but I soon found that Kelly Rae’s classes were akin to art therapy, probably in no small way due to the fact that she was a social worker before she became a professional artist. Her classes have helped me on a deep level and I highly recommend them.

Whatever you are going through, if life is going swimmingly for you at the moment, you can’t go wrong by purposefully taking steps to maintain your spiritual, emotional, and physical health. Good food, fresh air, exercise, and adequate sleep are basics. Add mindfulness meditation and relaxation for an even higher quality of life. Keeping a gratitude journal and surrounding yourself with positive mementos and positive people will really boost your mood. Pursue activities that bring you joy. And finally, but perhaps most importantly, find and connect with like-minded souls—we all need each other.

Self-care is Not Self-ish

All of us who have traveled by air have heard the flight attendant say,
“In the event of an emergency, please put on your oxygen mask before assisting others.”

I think this is good advice for all caregivers: parents, spouses, and those caring for the ill or elderly.

You have to make sure you’re okay before you can be there for someone else.

Caregivers by nature prioritize the one(s) who need their care.

It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but the truth is: when someone depends on you, your wellbeing becomes MORE, not less, important.

What then must be a caregiver’s priority?

Take care of your own wellbeing FIRST so you will be available when others need you.


Consider what you need to maintain your physical, social/emotional, and spiritual health.

For physical wellbeing, you need adequate nutrition, exercise & sleep.
For social/emotional health, you need connection with family, friends & community.
For spiritual health, you need connection with your soul self & your Creator.

Take a moment to write down how you are meeting your needs in each of these categories. If there is an area where you are lacking, make note of that, too. Commit to and prioritize what you need to do to take care of yourself!

Remember: self-care is not self-ish or self-indulgent! It is the first step you need to take when others depend on your care.

Why Ask Why?


As our family currently faces several trials, nothing aggravates me more than when someone asks the question,


“Why so many things at the same time in the same family?”

“Why would God allow this?”

“Why do our prayers seem to go unanswered?”

Friends, these are dangerous questions. They smack of an entitlement point of view—of spoiled children asking,

“Why me?”

“Why us?”

The Bible is clear.

Jesus says:

I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] John 16:33 (AMP)

Even Jesus’ followers are not immune to the trials rampant in the world (while we do have hope for the world to come).

My question, then, is not,

“Why me?”


“Why NOT me?”

Why have I never spent so much as a day without food or shelter while millions are born into poverty and homelessness?

Why have I (and members of my family) with potentially life-threatening illnesses been kept alive due to medical advances and easy access to medical care?

Why have I never faced danger in an area torn apart by warfare or terrorism?

Why have my children been born safely and survived childhood while women in many parts of the world will bury most of their babies before the age of five?

Why was I—a female—provided with free, public schooling while girls in other lands are denied education, or worse, sold into slavery or early marriage?

Certainly this is nothing to my credit.

I was not entitled to this privileged life.

So as someone born into privilege, what is my responsibility? When I face various trials, will my heart be softened to those for whom trials are constant? Will I reach out a helping hand to those who do not have the resources I so often take for granted?

Will I allow God to speak to my heart and show me:

There, but for the grace of God, go I?

Five Words that Restored My Hope

The itching was intense. My husband, Scott, said he understood the feeling of being attacked by all the fire ants in Texas. His liver panel was high, so his doctor sent him to a gastroenterologist who ordered an ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI. They revealed nothing.

The gastroenterologist hoped the problem would resolve naturally. Still, he wanted to send Scott to San Francisco for further testing. I asked if the benefits outweighed the risks.

“Oh yes,” he said gravely.

I had been told the tests would take several hours so I was surprised when my name was called an hour after Scott’s procedure began. My stomach clenched as a doctor led me into a closet-sized room and sat me down. “I didn’t need to do the second test,” he said. “During the endoscopic ultrasound, I found a mass blocking his bile duct.”

At the word mass, I tried not to think “tumor,” or worse, “cancer.” I swallowed hard and reminded myself to breathe.

The doctor’s face was taut, his brow furrowed. “Your husband needs surgery,” he explained. “I could send him home, but no one where you live performs this procedure. We have a pancreatic surgeon here. I’ve called him to come meet with you.”

I joined Scott in the recovery room and the surgeon came in minutes later. He seemed to care about Scott as a person, asking questions such as, “How long have you been married?”

“Not long enough,” Scott said. I squeezed his hand.

The surgeon tried to prepare us, though the truth was far beyond our grasp. I listened as if in a fog. “The surgery is called a Whipple, named after the doctor who invented it. It’s pretty involved. We’ll be removing part of the pancreas and bile duct, plus the duodenum and gallbladder. The digestive tract will be reconnected in three places. Recovery time in the hospital averages a few weeks. Full recovery takes at least three months.”

Good thing our daughter is home from college for the next month so she can take care of her younger brothers, I thought. There was no question of my leaving Scott alone.

The surgeon warned us not to look up pancreatic cancer. It would scare us, he said. He hoped the mass was a bile duct tumor that just happened to be located inside the pancreas.

Scott was admitted to the hospital. He called a local colleague, asking if he and his wife could put me up for the night. As I was feeling pretty shell-shocked and not up to navigating the unfamiliar streets, Scott’s friend picked me up and said he’d drop me off in the morning before Scott’s surgery.

Despite receiving a warm welcome, I didn’t sleep much at all. I tried listening to an audiobook but the fearful scenario playing in my head drowned it out. I might lose my husband — the man I’d been married to for 23 years, over half of my life — the father of our four children. What would I do without him?

At five a.m., I gave up trying to sleep and got up, took a shower, got dressed, sat, paced, walked upstairs to look for signs of my hosts being awake, walked back downstairs, paced, sat, and paced some more. After seven a.m., I began to hear footsteps above. I was eager to leave, but my attentive host insisted on getting me something to eat.

“I think I just need to get to the hospital,” I told him. It was seven-fifteen and Scott’s surgery was tentatively scheduled for seven-thirty.

When we finally pulled up in front of the hospital, I said a hasty thank you and jumped out of the car. I ran through the double doors, across the lobby to the elevator, and along the maze of halls to Scott’s sixth floor room. The curtains were pulled around the bed and I looked in. His bed was empty.

Panicking now, I went to the nurses’ station. “I’m looking for my husband, Scott Robertson?”

“They took him to O.R.”

“Where’s that?”

“Third floor.”

I ran back through the halls and took the elevator down to the third floor. I peeked past curtained doors as I made my way along the wide empty hallway. Spotting a nurse, I said, “I’m looking for my husband.”

“Is that him in there?” she asked.

I almost didn’t recognize the man in the green hospital gown and surgical cap, slumped in a wheelchair deep inside a cavernous room.

I ran to him.

“I wouldn’t let them take me in until you got here,” he said. Tears welled up in his eyes. “I love you,” we both said with a gentle hug and kiss. When they wheeled him into the operating room, I forced myself to not look back.

“I’ll call you if it goes longer than four hours,” said the nurse.

“Is that how long it will take?”

“It’s a general guideline. Now, don’t stay in the hospital,” she said, leading me to the elevator. “Go get breakfast. You’ll find lots of restaurants and shops down the block.”

I nodded numbly.

She put her arm around my shoulder and squeezed. “Don’t worry. He’s in the best of hands.”

“Thank you.” I backed into the elevator.

I left the hospital and walked around the neighborhood, first stepping into a coffee shop. I sat with my latte, gazing out the window, choking back sobs. Someone sat down in the chair next to mine, only to get up and move.

“Crying in a coffee shop is not cool,” I texted my daughter.

Somehow I passed the time, meandering in and out of shops, up and down unfamiliar city blocks. Four hours passed. The nurse called. “Scott is doing well. It will be another few hours.” A few hours later, I received an identical call.

I struck up a conversation with a shop proprietor. I was concerned that my phone battery was dying. She let me use her personal charger and asked if I’d watch her shop while she walked her dog. This was the first of many kindnesses I received from strangers, showing me I was not alone.

Seven and a half hours later, I got the call I’d been waiting for. Scott was out of surgery and his surgeon was waiting to talk to me in the lobby. I ran to the hospital, breathing heavily as I greeted the doctor. Scott had come through the surgery well, he said, but we’d have to wait for the pathology report to know more.

When could I see him and could I stay with him? I wanted to know.

The surgeon said it would be up to the nurses.

“Then I’d better go befriend some nurses,” I said. And I did. They set up a cot for me next to Scott’s bed and even ordered me some dinner.

By the grace of God, I didn’t experience any squeamishness from seeing tubes running in and out of my husband’s body, a ten-inch scar bisecting his abdomen. I just saw the man I loved. I told myself I wouldn’t cry in front of him unless we cried together.

He’s alive—I can work with that, I thought.

A week post-surgery, the surgeon brought the pathology report. He was sorry to tell us that it confirmed pancreatic cancer. The tumor was attached to a major artery; he had shaved it down as much as possible, but could not remove it all. He’d inserted clips to guide future radiation.

It wasn’t the first time our family had heard the word “cancer.”

Years before, when our neighbor’s dog had puppies, Scott kept telling the kids, no, they couldn’t have one. Then, while visiting the neighbors, one of the puppies crawled onto Scott’s lap and fell asleep. His resistance melted. She was ours.

We named our new puppy Rachel, and never was a new baby greeted with more fanfare. Soon our home was littered with all manner of puppy paraphernalia. At her first check-up, the vet found a lump in Rachel’s mouth and had it biopsied.

Little Rachel was diagnosed with cancer at only twelve weeks old.

Scott took her to a veterinary oncologist and surgeon but they could offer little hope. The cancer had already spread to her bones. Surgery would possibly prolong her life, but it would involve removing her jawbone and part of her sinus cavity. That didn’t sound like much of a life for a playful puppy.

As Rachel wasn’t bothered by the growth, we decided to give her as much love as we could until she showed signs of pain. Then we’d do what we knew we must to put her out of her misery.

Weeks later, Rachel’s eyes were bloodshot and her tumor’s growth had caused her gum to open up and bleed. I took her to our vet’s office. It was the first and only time I saw this particular vet; she was a friend from my homeschool support group who just happened to be filling in that day.

“What’s the prognosis?” I asked.

“In an older dog with these signs, they usually have about six weeks,” she told me. Then she added the words that I would hold onto in the days to come, “But I am not God.”

I took little Rachel home and prayed for her healing more fervently than ever. The kids had never stopped praying. Even our neighbor, who didn’t strike me as a praying man, was holding out for a miracle.

There were no more distressing symptoms. After a few weeks passed, we started to ask each other, “Is it my imagination, or is that tumor getting smaller?” A few months later, the tumor wasn’t evident at all.

“It’s a miracle,” a vet confirmed.

There was no evidence of cancer in any further exams. Rachel’s teeth came in where the tumor had once been and she grew into the beautiful, healthy dog we still have today, eight years later.

When Scott heard he had cancer, he changed his Facebook profile picture to a photo of Rachel.

Now Scott says that getting cancer has been the healthiest thing he’s ever done. He lost fifty pounds, causing his blood pressure to go down to normal and his sleep apnea to go away. The hospital neurologist offered him Botox injections for chronic migraine, which eliminated most of the chronic pain he’d struggled with for 30 years. His “vacation” from work allowed us to spend cherished time together and we’ve grown closer than ever. We even took his dream trip to his birthplace in Wales.

Nine months to the day after that first trip to the hospital, we went to Scott’s final chemo appointment. Survival statistics are still grim, but Scott refuses to be a statistic.

It’s hard not to try to predict the future or to prepare for the worst, but living in fear about tomorrow would rob me of the joy I have today. With our healthy, happy dog as a daily reminder of the power of prayer, I choose to live in gratitude and hope – remembering the five words that restored my hope about Rachel’s prognosis all those years ago, “But I am not God.”


Ask the Author

When did you start writing books?

In November 2010, I joined the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWrimo) challenge of writing a 50,000-word novel in one month. My first book was a pseudo-autobiographical preteen novel with a great lesson about accepting others and fitting in. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to come up with a suitable title. The original title involved the Fab Four, referring to the four friends in the book. You can tell the Beatles craze was a bit before my time as it took me a while to realize where I’d picked up that name!

What is your writing routine?

Since then, I’ve been hooked on writing. I try to make progress each day. I learn by reading good writing; studying about writing and publishing; and, of course, writing, researching, and revising. My writing technique varies. NaNoWrimo encourages writers to “turn off your inner editor” and just get out the first draft, then revise. This has helped me overcome my perfectionist tendencies to edit as I go. It has also allowed unexpected twists to come out as I write, since the characters start saying and doing things that even I do not expect.

After typing up each draft on my laptop, I print it out and make edits. It’s amazing what I can catch in print that I overlooked on the screen. I like to have others read printed copies and give me feedback. Then I go back to the drawing board—many, many times. I have discovered that I write quickly and edit slowly. I am constantly seeking to improve my craft and feel I will pursue this for the rest of my life.

What are you working on now?

In addition to polishing Missing You, Finding Me, I have several other novels waiting for final edits. Vicariously Yours involves an aspiring travel writer whose twin sister takes on her identity following a car accident—which becomes complicated when she falls in love with her editor through their correspondence. Facing Reality is the story of a young woman searching for her identity who risks losing herself in reality show fame. In The House on Depot Hill, a woman from the 1800’s reveals the truth behind her tragic past with the help of a modern day woman who is restoring her Victorian house. I hope to have several of these ready for publication by 2016.


Novel Q & A

Where did you get the idea for Missing You, Finding Me?

My husband and I have been married for 25 years and during that time I have seen how easy it can be to get out of sync with your partner simply from lack of communication. For my novel Missing You, Finding Me, I wanted to take this idea to the nth degree—to illustrate would happen if lack of communication drove a couple to live separate lives. I experimented with writing from different points of few, finally deciding to tell the story alternately from the first person POV of each spouse. It was important to me to show the reader that both characters are good people, even as they each make choices that make them look guilty in their partner’s eyes.

How did you come up with your main character and the challenges she faces?

Having spent most of my married life as a homemaker and homeschool mom, dependent on my husband’s income, I often wondered what I would do if something happened to him or to his job. I made my main character a homeschool mom, too, so her husband’s disappearance would have the greatest possible impact on her life.

What do you consider to be the central questions driving the novel?

As I took my main character through the steps to make a new life, including pursuing a career she’d given up when she’d married and had kids, I found myself wrestling with these central questions:

  • What if the “perfect” life she’d been living turned out to be different from the life she truly wanted?
  • What path would she choose if she had the opportunity to return to her old life once she’d established a new life on her own?

What kind of research did you do for the novel?

My primary research for this book involved touring the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in St. Helena, CA and accompanying my husband as he attended a bread-baking boot camp. This, plus reading online accounts from participants, inspired the experience my main character has in the book. My high school French classes and two trips to France provided inspiration as well. I also had to do online research about legal aspects of insider trading, divorce and child custody in California.
